PART ONE
My name is Djoumeni, I am 18 years old and hail from the Bandjoun clan. I featured among the best students across the national territory during the GCE Exam. After GCE results were published, I had just one destination, the same University I had always dreamed about – The University of Buea(UB). I remember when UB students used to come to the village for holidays , the amazing stories they told about UB, the place to be. The admiration they got from the village lads who looked up to them as community heroes. I had made up my mind long ago to be a UB student, and a proud one at that.
Fortunately, my parents supported my decision with no objection, much to my surprise. Perhaps I was indeed destined for UB or was it just a financially convenient Option for Mama and Papa? I was completely oblivious of this detail and honestly didn’t care much.
Seasons Changed quickly and I finally got the Buea. The town was indeed amazingly beautiful , buildings I had seen only in movies, tarred neat streets and street lights.( You may think I am exaggerating until you see where I come from). For the first time, I had a house of my own, a tight little cubicle/room anyway but the feeling was great. I was exciting to have the long awaited freedom, freedom to explore the world, do anything anytime with absolutely no restriction.
I had arrived quite my hostel quite late and hungry, so I took a little walk, hoping to find food to save my grumbling belly. Well, im no sure what she wanted but I remember she welcomed me to the hostel, we did a brief introduction and she walked off gracefully.
I finished organizing my room by 11:00pm after which I retired for the night. I lay in bed with a hundred thoughts running through my mind in split seconds. This was really it, I was not dreaming. The life I always desired was just about to begin. Suddenly, a wave of panic and anxiety gripped me as the reality of beginning life in a strange land/town dawned on me. Then I remembered moms last words as we parted that morning :
“Remember you are the pride of this family. Concentrate on your book work and put God first in everything you do.”
Mum said with a tender parting hug. I had felt the emotion in the moment as though she was loosing me for good. I took a deep deep breath, closed my eyes and said a short prayer after which I dozed off in tiredness. Moments later, my weary eyes opened at a slight sound at the door. A sudden grip of fear took hold of me as I reached out for the switch in a semi sleepy state under the influence of Adrenaline. To my greatest dismay, there, right next to me stood a lady in short “hot pant” and a sleeveless bra, covered by a practically transparent pyjama. It was Delisa…
